Dec. 19—SAYBROOK — A head-on collision between a Chevrolet Equinox and a garbage truck early Wednesday morning resulted in the death of an Ashtabula woman, according to a press release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred around 7:55 a.m. on Route 45, near milepost 25, in Saybrook, according to the release.
Brenda Hawes, 52, of Ashtabula, was driving a 2015 black Chevrolet Equinox southbound on SR 45 when she traveled left of center and struck a northbound garbage truck head-on, according to the release.
Hawes was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the garbage truck was not injured in the crash.
The crash shut down Route 45 for approximately 2.5 hours while law enforcement and emergency crews cleared the wreckage and investigated the scene, according to the release.
The Saybrook Fire Department and Ohio Department of Transportation assisted at the scene.
This crash remains under investigation.
