Old Forester celebrates end of Prohibition with limited edition whiskey

With Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and New Year’s Eve all taking place in December — you are forgiven if a fifth celebration slipped your mind. Repeal Day, observed Dec. 5, is the date prohibition was lifted in 1933 and spirits began to flow again, after 13 dry years, in Kentucky and across the country.

To celebrate the 91st anniversary of the end of Prohibition, Old Forester released Warehouse I, a limited-edition whiskey. The latest addition to the 117 series features 11-year-old bourbon with a unique flavor profile of apricot, butterscotch, clove, nutmeg and white pepper.

Old Forester’s limited edition Warehouse I is bottled at 95-proof (47.5% ABV) in a 375 ml bottle. Suggested retail price,$64.99.

Each bottle comes from barrels aged in Old Forester’s Warehouse I, resulting in a flavor profile distinct to the warehouse’s unique maturation environment. These Warehouse I barrels were heat-cycled since 2013 and chosen exclusively from the hottest floors.

“Our 117 series is all about experimentation,” said Melissa Rift, Old Forester Master Taster. “The characteristics of Warehouse I make it perfect for this innovative series.”

With New Year’s Eve on the horizon, this one-of-a-kind bourbon, bottled at 95-proof (47.5% ABV) in a 375 ml bottle, could make a nice addition to your celebration. A limited quantity was made available on Repeal Day at the Old Forester Distillery, 119 W Main St. in downtown Louisville. Warehouse I was also made available at select Kentucky retailers and online at shop.oldforester.com. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price is $64.99.

Old Forester was founded by George Garvin Brown in 1870 on Louisville’s famous Whiskey Row. Brown believed Old Forester was so pure and consistent that he sealed it, signed it, and pledged, “There is nothing better in the market.”

From 1920 to 1933 the federal government banned the production, trade, and transportation of alcohol in the country however, Brown’s Old Forester was one of only a few companies awarded a medical license by the federal government and the was the only bourbon brand continually sold before, during and after Prohibition.

Cheers!
