Orange County deputies shoot man in foot while trying to arrest teen suspect in drive-bys

Orange County deputies shot a 24-year-old man in the foot Wednesday afternoon at the scene where they were trying to arrest a teen suspect in two drive-bys when he pulled out a gun, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The shooting took place around 1 p.m. in front of a home in the 5200 block of Montague Place in Pine Hills where deputies tracked the suspect in the early-morning drive-by shootings, according to a news release from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

At that location, deputies confronted a group of people, one of whom was the teen armed with a handgun and an extended magazine, according to the news release. The teen refused orders to drop the weapon and two deputies opened fire.

“There was another subject who was there who ended up getting shot in the foot,” Sheriff John Mina said during a news conference later in the afternoon. “He’s going to be OK as far as I know.”

It’s not known what charges the teen is facing but Mina said deputies issued an arrest warrant after the drive-bys at the same home on San Jose Boulevard — one at 2:40 a.m. and another at 8:47 a.m. Deputies recovered shell casings at the scene but no evidence anyone was shot and no injuries were reported.

Mina investigators are expected to present charges against several people relating to the drive-bys but no names or charges have been released. At least one firearm was recovered from the scene

The deputies were placed on administrative leave pending a Florida Department of Law Enforcement review of the shooting, he said. FDLE will turn over its findings to the State Attorney’s Office for review. Once that process is completed, the sheriff’s office will conduct its own internal investigation. Sheriff’s office policy requires release of body-worn camera video within 30 days.
