A federal judge in Oregon blocked Kroger’s proposed $25 billion merger with Albertsons, according to CNN.
According to the judge’s ruling, the deal would limit competition between grocery stores and negatively impact consumers.
The companies own dozens of grocery chains, including Safeway, QFC, and Fred Meyer.
Kroger and Albertsons say the deal is needed to stay competitive with other companies like Walmart.
Washington also sued to block the nearly $25 billion deal.
A King County Superior Court judge is expected to issue a ruling as well today.
