Jan. 16—COLUMBUS — As any serious angler will tell you, a fish weighing nearly four pounds is something to brag about.
As panfish go, a fish that size is indeed a whopper. Just ask an Ottawa woman who now holds the Ohio state record after catching a 3.91-pound crappie last fall.
According to the Ohio Division of Wildlife, a 29-year Ohio state record for white crappie has been topped. Following an official state weigh-in and inspection, the new record now is held by Teresa Croy, of Ottawa.
Croy on Nov. 2 caught a white crappie weighing 3.91 pounds from a pond at the Glandorf Rod and Gun Club in Putnam County. That weight surpassed by 0.01 pound the previous state record.
The fish measured 18.5 inches long was landed on 8-pound test monofilament line using a worm for bait. The previous state record white crappie was caught from a private pond near Zanesville in 1995.
Ohio’s record fish are determined on the basis of weight only and are certified by the Outdoor Writers of Ohio State Record Fish Committee with assistance from fishery biologists from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
