After search efforts located a missing 6-year-old girl with autism, earlier today, Norton police announced that she has passed away.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the victim,” said Fire Chief Shawn Simmons.
Members of the Norton Fire and Police Department were dispatched to Power Street around 2:28 P.M. to search for the missing 6-year-old.
The area, being close to Barrowsville Pond and Wading River, warranted members of the Norton Fire to put on cold water rescue gear to search the icy pond.
A rescue command post was set up at the bridge across from the home of the child, with mutual aid provided by Massachusetts State Police, Metropolitan Law Enforcement Council, and Norton Emergency Management Agency
Divers located the girl around 3:27 P.M. in the water towards the Barrowsville side of the Bridge.
Once out of the water, EMS began to perform life-saving efforts at the scene and in the ambulance while transporting her to Sturdy Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.
“Our hearts go out to the family,” said Police Chief Brian M. Clark. “We offer our condolences for their loss.”
