Overnight fire in New Bedford two-family house leaves 5 adults, 5 kids displaced

NEW BEDFORD — Five adults and five children were displaced by a fire in a two-story, two-family home at 449 Cedar Grove St. that was called into the New Bedford Fire Department at 11:35 p.m. Tuesday.

Firefighters on arrival reported a large volume of fire extending from the second floor on the south side of the building, and Engine 7 reported possible entrapment of two residents who weren’t accounted for, according to the NBFD Facebook page.

Command Unit 2 called a for a second alarm response and multiple crews conducted a primary search. Both missing residents were later accounted for, according to the NBFD.

The fire had extended into the attic which required vertical ventilation of the roof.

All four pets accounted for and assisted

The five adults and five children who were displaced are being assisted by the American Red Cross of Massachusetts. All four pets were accounted for and were assisted by New Bedford Police Animal Control.

The fire’s cause was investigated by the NBFD Fire Investigation Unit and determined to be accidental. One firefighter was injured and treated by New Bedford EMS on the scene. City of New Bedford Department of Public Infrastructure responded with sanders due to the icy conditions on the fireground, according to the NBFD.

Providence Canteen, the city’s Emergency Management, and New Bedford Police also assisted on scene. Mutual aid coverage was provided by Fairhaven, Acushnet and Dartmouth Fire District 1.
