Although fireworks are illegal within Corpus Christi city limits, including local beaches, it does not stop people from popping them on New Year’s Eve.
The Corpus Christi fire and police departments said offenders may receive a fine of up to $2,000 for each opened package of fireworks.
Nueces County issued an order that prohibits the use and sale of certain aerial fireworks in the unincorporated areas of the county, including skyrockets with sticks and missiles with fins.
Charles Newton, owner of Punisher Pyros, said with every firework he sells, he teaches customers about firework safety.
Different types of fireworks are on display at Punisher Pyros in Corpus Christi on Monday.
“It’s one of the most important things we tell people,” Newton said. “For example, you always have to make sure you have a bucket of water to douse the fireworks in when you’re done with them. Or in case you need to put it out, pour the bucket of water on the firework.”
Punisher Pyros has two locations this year, 1221 FM 43 and 2096 TX-286.
Other safety guidelines to follow for those planning to use fireworks outside city limits include:
-
Never use fireworks if you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
-
Never let young children handle fireworks.
-
Older children should only use fireworks with adult supervision.
-
Never light fireworks indoors.
-
Use fireworks away from people, homes and combustible materials.
-
Light only one firework at a time and keep a safe distance after igniting.
-
Do not ignite fireworks in a container.
-
Avoid relighting or handling malfunctioning fireworks.
If people observe any illegal fireworks being used, report it to 361-886-COPS (2677). Residents should not call 911 for firework-related issues.
