Oxford woman sentenced to 5 years for assaulting officer

OXFORD – A Lafayette County woman who put a stolen gun against a police officer’s head during an early morning altercation last spring was allowed to plead to a lesser charge and received a 5-year sentence.

Jacqueline Denise Giles, 36, of Oxford, was indicted on the charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, intimidating a witness and retaliation against a public servant. She was facing up to 60 years in prison.

Giles was allowed to plead to the lesser charge of simple assault on a law enforcement officer. In exchange, the state dropped the charges of intimidating a witness and retaliation against a public servant.

Following her plea Friday in Lafayette County Circuit Court, Judge John Kelly Luther sentenced Giles to the maximum of 5 years and a $1,000 fine. She was given credit for nearly 300 days of time already served. Giles has been free on bond since December and must report to Lafayette County Detention Center Feb. 5 at 9 a.m. to begin serving her sentence.

According to reports at the time, Oxford police were dispatched Sunday, March 3, 2024 at 1:58 a.m. to the Double Quick parking lot for a disturbance. The first officer on the scene saw a large crowd had gathered. While walking the parking lot, the female officer reportedly saw a fight between two men next to a gas pump.

The officer attempted to break up the fight by pulling apart the two combatants. At that point, the officer said she felt a cold, metal object pressed on her temple, the OPD press release said. The officer quickly turned and was able to remove the firearm from the female suspect, who was taken into custody without further incident. The gun was reported stolen from Oxford in 2020.

Giles was booked into the Lafayette County Detention Center and held in lieu of a $275,000 bond. The bond was later reduced to $75,000 and three months later, Giles was released from jail in December 2024.
