Palisades and Eaton fire containment continues as dangerous weather may loom

Firefighters continued their efforts on the Palisades and Eaton fires on Friday.

The four other blazes that kicked up in various parts of Los Angeles and Ventura counties since Jan. 7 have reached 100% containment.

The Hurst, Kenneth, Lidia, and Auto fires have all been fully contained. No structures were damaged, and no deaths were reported.

The Palisades Fire has reached 31% containment, and nearly 24,000 acres have burned. Almost 5,000 structures have been damaged or destroyed, and 10 deaths have been reported.

The Eaton Fire has burned over 14,000 acres and is 65% contained. It has also devastated over 7,000 structures, with 17 reported deaths and over 7,000 destroyed.

Weekend weather forecast could help firefighters, but dangers remain

While fire crews battle two of the worst fires in Los Angeles, they might enjoy some respite as a rise in humidity levels will help alleviate the dry conditions that helped fuel the spread of wildfires, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters warned, however, that Santa Ana winds are likely to return early next week, “especially later Monday into Tuesday,” but it was too early to judge how strong that event might be.

Some county residents might also enjoy some relief, as evacuation orders have been lifted recently in the Eaton and Palisades Fire burn areas, including more than three dozen neighborhoods on the outskirts of the Palisades Fire on Friday.

Authorities urge people to stay out of evacuation zones

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said Thursday he understands the desire for people to return, especially if their homes are undamaged and habitable, but he expects it to be “at least another week, and that’s an estimate, but I believe it’s going to be longer than that” before most evacuations are lifted.

The county has implemented a curfew that continues to be in effect nightly from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. in the mandatory evacuation areas in the Eaton and Palisades fire zones. Only firefighters, utility workers, and law enforcement personnel are allowed in those areas.
