Dartmouth High School was put in a “shelter in place” on Wednesday morning after a student allegedly tried stabbing a classmate with a makeshift weapon.
A juvenile suspect was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, assault with intent to murder, assault and battery, and assault with intent to cause serious bodily harm, according to police.
Officers received a 911 call from inside the high school at approximately 10:30 a.m., claiming that two students were fighting in the hallway.
Arriving officers found that the two students had been separated from one another after one of them fled into a nearby office.
Investigators say the suspect approached the victim in the hallway and tried stabbing them with a pen that had a screwdriver attached to the other end.
The victim was able to get away from the suspect and wasn’t physically injured. Both the suspect and victim were known to each other.
The suspect was arrested and transported to a local hospital, according to authorities.
“Thankfully, no one was hurt during this incident”, said Dartmouth Police Chief Brian P. Levesque. “We’re grateful for the quick response and close collaboration between officers of the Dartmouth Police Department and staff at the Dartmouth High School to not only contain this incident, but for the professionalism and compassion displayed responding to a call for service of this nature.”
The incident remains under investigation.
