Police investigate deadly Colerain Township shooting near Popeyes, Walgreens. What we know

Two people were killed and another was critically injured in a shooting in Colerain Township on Thursday afternoon.

The shooting first reported just before 1 p.m., drew a large police presence to the area of the Colerain Avenue and Springdale Road intersection. The police’s investigation prompted temporary closures of businesses in the vicinity, including a Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, Walgreens, Shell gas station and Dunkin’ Donuts coffee shop.

There were two people listed on the Friday morning coroner’s report as apparent homicide victims on Colerain Avenue. However, the report states their names are not known.

Here’s everything that we know:

What happened during the shooting?

The shooting started in the parking lot of the Popeyes, with one of the victims dying inside a blue Infiniti and the second dying just outside the vehicle, according to a Colerain Township spokesperson. Life-saving measures were performed on both victims when they were located but they were determined to be dead at the scene, Colerain police said in a news release.

An Enquirer reporter on the scene said the Infiniti had 12 gunshots through the passenger window.

Shortly following the shooting outside the Popeyes, a third victim was then shot in the parking lot of the Walgreens, located directly across the street. The victim was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center where he is in “critical but stable condition,” the spokesperson said.

Who were the victims?

All three victims in the shooting are male, the spokesperson said, but police have yet to release their identities as of Thursday evening.

The Hamilton County coroner’s report released early Friday lists two victims of “apparent homicide” at Colerain Avenue on Thursday. The report states the names of the male victims are not known. Their ages were also not listed.

Has a suspect been located?

Police have identified one suspect, who is still at large, but have not released any information on the suspect’s description, according to the spokesperson. The search for the suspect is ongoing, with police saying that it’s possible there are multiple.

What was the motive behind the shooting?

Police have not released any information regarding a motive.

The spokesperson said police believe the two victims killed near the Popeyes were targeted, but it is unclear if the victim injured near the Walgreens was also targeted. It’s also unclear whether the shooting was executed in a drive-by fashion.

Police said in a news release that there was no threat to public safety.
