Police make arrest in fatal shooting of 17-year-old in New Haven

Police have arrested a teen in connection with the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old in New Haven last month.

The suspect, 17, was arrested Monday in connection with the killing of Daily Jackson, according to Officer Christian Bruckhart of the New Haven Police Department. The suspect’s name is not expected to be released until his matter is transferred to adult court.

On Dec. 3, Jackson was found lying in a driveway suffering from gunshot injuries when officers responded at 6:41 p.m. to the area of Shelton Avenue and Huntington Street on the report of a person being shot, police said.

Jackson was walking along the sidewalk when he was shot during what appeared to be a targeted attack, according to police. He was treated at the scene before being rushed to Yale New Haven Hospital where he died, police said.

Video surveillance recovered by members of the Real Time Crime Center showed that the shooter fired at Jackson from inside a vehicle as the teen was along Shelton Avenue, police said.

Jackson was a student at Riverside Academy and was friends with fellow classmate 16-year-old Uzziah Shell, who was shot and killed on Nov. 22 on Goffe Street.

According to New Haven Police Chief Karl Jacobson, authorities believe both Jackson and Shell had been feuding with other groups of teens and young adults in the city prior to the slayings. He said both killings are believed to be tied to the ongoing disputes, which police believe led to additional incidents including other shootings.

About a week after Jackson’s killing, police announced that an anonymous donor was offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever was responsible for killing the 17-year-old. The reward had no affiliations with the police department or the New Haven State’s Attorney’s Office.

According to police, Det. Thomas Blaisdell of the New Haven Major Crimes Unit was able to secure an arrest warrant for the 17-year-old charged in Jackson’s death. The teen was taken Monday to the juvenile detention facility in Bridgeport.

The suspect’s identity is expected to be released once his matter is transferred to adult court, which is expected to happen on Wednesday, police said.
