POLICE NEWS: Topeka business owner hopes to rebuild after fire

Jan. 7—A fire at Topeka Mattress & Furniture Sales resulted in a total loss, but owners are hoping to rebuild.

The fire occurred on Dec. 22 just before 10 a.m. There were no injuries reported but Parkview EMS was on-site to provide medical support and the LaGrange County Sheriff’s Department assisted with traffic control.

The cause of the fire has been ruled undetermined.

Shipshewana Fire Department, Millersburg Clinton Fire Territory, Ligonier Fire Department, and LaGrange Fire Department also assisted.

Man hospitalized in morning crash

GOSHEN — A man was hospitalized Tuesday following a crash outside Goshen.

Elkhart County deputies reported that around 5 a.m., Deven Beach, 27, of Columbia City, was traveling north on U.S. 33, east of C.R. 33, in a 2001 Toyota Echo when he lost control of the vehicle and ran off the northeast side of the road, coming to rest partially on a tree.

Beach was transported to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne for a possible head injury.

HIT-AND-RUN

—A 44-year-old man reported to Elkhart County deputies that his vehicle was involved in a crash with a white Chrysler Town & Country van in the 72000 block of C.R. 29 in Syracuse at 9:45 a.m. Dec. 31. The van left the scene.

—A 20-year-old woman reported to Elkhart County deputies at 12:04 p.m. Jan. 3 that someone in a red pickup truck left the scene after colliding with her van while turning onto Bluff Crest Drive from C.R. 13 in Elkhart.

—A 55-year-old man reported to Elkhart County deputies at 6:02 p.m. Saturday a dark Chevrolet pickup truck sideswiped his Honda CRV near C.R. 46 and C.R. 31 and fled the scene.

—A 35-year-old man reported to Elkhart County deputies at 12:44 a.m. Sunday a white Dodge Ram pickup truck changed lanes and struck his Tesla causing him to drive off the road on C.R. 20 east of Ash Road. The Ram reportedly fled the scene.

—Goshen police were called to Kroger, 206 Chicago Ave., at 5:05 p.m. Monday for a hit-and-run where someone struck a parked car.

ARRESTS

—A 53-year-old man was arrested and jailed by Goshen police at 10:57 a.m. Sunday on charges of possession of meth, cocaine, marijuana, and paraphernalia, after he was stopped near C.R. 45 and Missouri Avenue for a traffic infraction.

—A 25-year-old man was arrested and jailed by Goshen police at 12:34 p.m. Sunday on charges of resisting law enforcement and an active arrest after he was found hiding in a shed in the 900 block of South 10th Street and refused to come out, officers reported. Police deployed several measures, including a K-9, and he was taken into custody.

—A 42-year-old man was arrested and jailed by Goshen police at 12:41 a.m. Monday on charges of domestic battery with priors, unlawful possession of a hypodermic needle, intimidation, and criminal mischief after police were called to a home on Silverwood Lane for a domestic altercation.

—A 33-year-old man was arrested and jailed by Goshen police at 12:35 a.m. Monday on a charge of resisting law enforcement after police attempted to stop him for an equipment violation on a bicycle near the intersection of 15th Street and Douglas Street, and he instead led them on a short foot pursuit.

—An 18-year-old man was arrested and jailed by Elkhart County deputies at 3:21 p.m. Saturday on charges of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon after he allegedly fired off two rounds from a firearm during a verbal altercation in the 64000 block of C.R. 21.

—A 32-year-old man was arrested and jailed by Elkhart County deputies at 8:02 p.m. Saturday on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated with priors, resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, leaving the scene of a crash, criminal mischief, reckless driving and violation of a conditional license after police attempted to stop him for a traffic violation near C.R. 16 and C.R. 3.

—A 23-year-old man was arrested and jailed by Elkhart County deputies at 2:42 a.m. Sunday on a charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated with priors after he was stopped for a traffic violation on Old U.S. 33 near Tower Road in Elkhart.
