Police officer, man shot after disturbance at a home

A police officer and a man have been shot after a physical altercation at a suburban home.

Queensland Police were called to the home in Tamar Street in the Brisbane suburb of Annerley about 9.15am on Friday after reports of a disturbance.

When officers arrived, a physical altercation began between the male constable and a man.

Both the officer and the man were then shot, police say.

They have been taken to hospital for treatment.

Queensland Premier David Crisafulli says the incident needs to be thoroughly investigated. (Darren England/AAP PHOTOS)

Premier David Crisafulli said incidents such as these “sends a shiver up your spine”.

“It shows you why people respect the men and women in the Queensland Police Service so very much,” he told reporters.

“They run towards situations where others naturally run away and there’s no place for that modern Queensland.”

Mr Crisafulli said he hoped an investigation would find ways to better protect police.

“If wrongdoing is found to have occurred, I’d like to see the strongest of signals sent to make sure that people who sign up to be police officers know that the system will protect them when they’re going about their business,” he said.

An investigation into the incident will be undertaken by the Ethical Standards Command with oversight by the Crime and Corruption Commission.
