Police: Shooting suspect on the run after cutting off ankle monitor

Police are searching for a suspect in a domestic dispute that led to gunfire early Thursday morning in Iredell County.

Deputies with the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office said they responded to a call about a shooting at the intersection of Wiggins Road and Mount Ulla Highway around 3:15 a.m.

The victim is in the hospital recovering and investigators said the suspect – 33-year-old John Dexter Wines – cut off his court-ordered ankle monitor and took off.

Investigators said that prior to the shooting, Wines followed the victim’s car and blocked it at an intersection. During the confrontation, police said Wines shot the victim with a handgun before fleeing toward Rowan County.

Wines was wearing a court-ordered ankle monitor due to prior domestic violence charges, according to investigators, but cut it off and removed it after he fled the scene of the shooting.

Police said Wines is facing several charges, including felony assault with deadly weapon with intent to kill.

Anyone with information about Wines’ whereabouts is asked to call ICSO at 704-878-3100.
