Newberry Township Police have filed charges against a man who allegedly assaulted family members and was tased by officers who responded to the home, according to court records.
Evan G. Houseman, 20, of the 100 block of Sam Snead Circle, faces charges of aggravated assault, strangulation — applying pressure to the throat/neck, terroristic threats, simple assault and other offenses. He was taken to a hospital to be evaluated for any medical issues, according to an affidavit of probable cause.
Police responded to the home on Jan. 5 after the father called 911 to report that Houseman was assaulting his wife, who has a protection from abuse order against him, the affidavit states. Dispatchers could hear a struggle in the background.
Officers found Houseman to the rear of the property when they arrived and ordered him put his hands behind his back. Police allege that he did not comply and began walking toward the victim, who was a few feet away, the affidavit states.
“I had to deploy my taser on Evan to gain control of him,” an officer wrote in the affidavit. “Evan was arrested. While in custody, Evan kicked myself and Officer Werner in sensitive areas of our bodies that could have caused serious injury. Evan kicked us several times.”
Police interviewed the husband and wife. She told investigators an argument with Houseman started the day before when he wanted money. She denied it. The morning of the incident, Houseman grabbed her head and pushed it to the floor, placing her in a headlock, the affidavit states.
Then Houseman threw a television and an Xbox down the stairs as he and his father argued. When the father walked down the stairs to assess the damage, the son allegedly pushed him down the last couple of steps. The father told police he hit his head on a garage door, the affidavit states.
The father went outside, but his son followed. The man told investigators that Houseman pushed him down in the driveway and put him in a headlock. He had trouble breathing from the position he was in as well as his son’s weight on top of him, the affidavit states.
The father told investigators that Houseman threatened to “take you both out,” the affidavit states.
Both the husband and wife were transported to the hospital, the affidavit states.
