Portsmouth councilman arrested and charged with domestic assault, police say

PORTSMOUTH — City Councilman De’Andre Barnes was arrested and charged Sunday with domestic assault.

Around 9:09 p.m. Sunday, police were called to the 200 block of Boat Street, in a neighborhood off Deep Creek Blvd. south of Bide-a-Wee golf course, after a report of a possible burglary.

After officers had arrived, they determined that the incident was a domestic dispute involving Barnes, police said.

While officers were still on the scene, a physical altercation occurred and resulted in the councilman’s arrest, according to a news release. Police provided no other information on the physical altercation.

Barnes was released on personal recognizance.

This was the second time in less than a month that Barnes has been arrested. On November 12, Barnes was arrested but not charged after officers were called for a domestic dispute involving the councilman and his daughter.
