NEW PHILADELPHIA — The Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District (MWCD) is seeking public input on designating the Walhonding River as a state Water Trail.
The 23.5-mile river, formed by the confluence of the Mohican and Kokosing Rivers, flows through Coshocton County and joins the Tuscarawas River near Coshocton, creating the Muskingum River.
According to a press release from MWCD, the designation would provide paddling access, safety resources and essential amenities for outdoor enthusiasts.
A public meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Jan. 28 at the Coshocton County Commissioners’ Community Building, 637 Chestnut St., Coshocton.
For those unable to attend, a short survey is available at mwcd.org.
The Water Trail designation program is administered by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Parks and Watercraft.
If designated, the Walhonding River will join the Muskingum Watershed system of water trails, which would create a designated riverway system totaling more than 300 miles.
