Rain expected tonight and tomorrow across Florida. When does the cold front hit?

Relax and enjoy the warmth while you can. Today, Dec. 10, should be a nice day everywhere in Florida besides the Panhandle, which is expected to see more rain through the evening and a chance of thunderstorms, according to the latest forecasts from the National Weather Center.

Overnight and tomorrow, most of the rest of the state is probably going to get wet, and then cold.

There is a chance of widespread showers across Florida, starting tonight in the north and spreading to Central and Southwest Florida Wednesday with gusty winds and a chance of thunderstorms, forecasters said.

Then the strong cold front moving in from the Gulf of Mexico will hit. Temps across the state will see a slight dip tonight but Wednesday night and Thursday morning will be the coldest, with much of the state dropping into the 40s, South Florida into the 50s and parts of North Florida in the 30s (with the Tallahassee area near freezing).

Temperatures are expected to rise pretty quickly after that, however, with warm and sunny weather forecast for the weekend everywhere except, again, the Panhandle, which may see more showers and cooler temps.

Florida weather: How much rain will we get?

The rain in the Panhandle will be mostly a good thing, according to the Florida Division of Emergency Management forecast, to help with ongoing draught conditions, but multiple rounds of rainfall over the same areas the first few days of the week could give way to “localized instances of flooding and ponding of water as grounds become saturated.”

Urban and low-lying areas and poor drainage areas are particularly vulnerable in the event of locally higher rainfall, the FDEP said.

“High temperatures will rise into the 70s along the Florida Panhandle Monday and Tuesday, but soar into the upper 70s to middle 80s elsewhere across the state,” the FDEP 5-day forecast said. “Low temperatures will remain in the upper 50s to middle 60s nearly statewide Monday with low to middle 70s along the Southeast Coast and Keys.

“The Florida Panhandle and portions of the Suwannee Valley will see low temperatures fall into the 50s Tuesday night as the cold front moves through while the rest of the state remains in the middle 60s to middle 70s.”

Will new cold front bring snow to Florida?

Probably not.

For snow to fall, there has to be moisture in the atmosphere and the temperature has to be right.

“Snow forms when the atmospheric temperature is at or below freezing — 0°C or 32°F,” according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center.

“If the ground temperature is at or below freezing, the snow will reach the ground. However, the snow can still reach the ground when the ground temperature is above freezing if the conditions are just right.

“As a general rule, though, snow will not form if the ground temperature is at least 41” degrees Fahrenheit.
