Red Sox acquiring LHP Garrett Crochet in blockbuster trade with White Sox

While both the Mets and Yankees were in the running to land Chicago White Sox lefty Garrett Crochet, it turns out that he’ll be trading in his current socks for a pair of a different color.

First reported by Julian McWilliams of the Boston Globe, Crochet is being traded to the Red Sox in a blockbuster trade that includes multiple prospects going to Chicago: catcher Kyle Teel (Boston’s No. 4 prospect), outfielder Braden Montgomery (No. 5), infielder Chase Meidroth (No. 11), and RHP Wikelman Gonzalez (No. 14).

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Yankees dropped out of Crochet trade talks after agreeing to a deal with Max Fried, while the Mets were still engaged with Chicago leading up to the trade.

Crochet was undoubtedly the biggest name on the trading block, due to his electric stuff and the fact that he is still just 25 years old.

Crochet spent his first three healthy seasons (he missed all of 2022 due to Tommy John surgery) as a reliever for the Sox, pitching to a 2.71 ERA with 10.5 strikeouts per nine innings. Despite having never pitched more than 54.1 innings in a season, the White Sox converted Crochet to a starter in 2024, and he excelled, pitching to a 3.58 ERA over 32 starts (146.0 innings) with 12.9 strikeouts per nine.

Crochet was one of the hottest names on the trade block around last season’s trade deadline, but he made it clear that he wouldn’t pitch for a new team without a new contract in place, and the White Sox ultimately held on to him for the time being.

Now, the flame-throwing lefty, who is under team control through the 2026 season, joins a Red Sox team hoping to challenge the Yankees for the AL East title.
