Repeat offender charged with kidnapping, assault with knife

Jan. 11—A Sanford man with two previous domestic-violence-related convictions and a probation violation was charged with second-degree kidnapping, assault with a dangerous weapon, assault on a female and resisting a police officer stemming from Nov. 3, 2024.

Otis James Haynes Jr., 34, of the 5100 block of Amber Lane, was arrested after he allegedly struck Jasmine Jade Jones in the face, cut her with a kitchen knife and obstructed police officer Samuel Truelove during the arrest, according to eCourts.

Haynes was held on a $60,000 secured bond by District Court Judge Frank Wood in that case, but has an additional secured bond of $10,000 stemming from two later charges for interfering with emergency communications and habitual misdemeanor assault. The latter bonds were set Dec. 10, 2024 by Judge C. Winston Gilchrist.

Haynes pleaded guilty to communicating threats stemming from Oct. 5, 2022, when he threatened to injure Jones by sending texts and through social media, according to a court document. He was given a suspended 45-day sentence with credit for two days served, along with one year of probation, by District Court Judge Paul A. Holcombe III.

Haynes was convicted of assault on a female and injury to personal property stemming from Oct. 14, 2016. The complainants in that case were J. Kelly and Shawn Jones. Haynes was given a 60-day suspended sentence with credit for 21 days served. However, probation was revoked on Jan. 10, 2018, and Haynes was ordered to complete the remainder of the 60-day sentence.

Haynes was charged with carrying a concealed weapon stemming from April 10, 2014, but that charge was dismissed, according to eCourts.

He is scheduled to be arraigned for the latest charges on Jan. 27.
