Retail theft crackdown in Amarillo ends in 22 arrests, $46,500 of items recovered

A slew of thefts across Amarillo area businesses has resulted in more than 20 arrests made during a task force operation, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) said the operation took place Dec. 3-5 and involved law enforcement agencies including the Amarillo Police Department, Potter County Sheriff’s Office, Randall County Sherriff’s Office and U.S. Homeland Security Investigations.

During the operation, 22 individuals were arrested and 12 others received citations for various theft offenses. An estimated $46,500 in stolen property was recovered. The operation also resulted in the seizure of more than 70 grams of methamphetamine, more than 14 grams of methadone, an estimated $5,000 in U.S. currency, and a 2012 Chevrolet pickup truck.

“Theft has a devastating impact on businesses, and DPS continues targeting retail theft in local communities to alleviate the hardship on businesses and consumers,” a news release stated. “This coordinated effort underscores the importance of inter-agency collaboration in addressing theft and drug-related activities in Texas.”
