Richmond man charged with killing driver who crashed car into Chester residence Jan. 1

CHESTERFIELD – Police have arrested a Richmond man in connection with the death of a driver whose car crashed into a residence early New Year’s Day in Chester.

Nekyi Cherry, 20, of the 1500 block of North 35th Street, has been charged with second-degree murder and shooting in a public place, according to a statement from Chesterfield Police Friday afternoon. He was picked up Thursday in Henrico County with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Capital Area Fugitive Task Force and is being held without bond at the Chesterfield County Jail.

The victim in this case was identified as 19-year-old Andrew Giles, of the 700 block of Semmes Avenue in Richmond.

Giles’ body was discovered inside a vehicle that crashed into a townhome on Broadwater Way, just off Harrowgate Road in Chester. He had been shot several times and died behind the wheel just before the crash.
