Road rage in Madison County ends with two men fighting in downtown Colbert

Madison County sheriff’s investigators are trying to identify a road rage suspect who fled the scene with a bloody face after authorities said he fought with the other motorist.

The fight occurred at about 12:30 p.m. Sunday in downtown Colbert.

The sheriff’s report shows that a 28-year-old Comer man was traveling on Georgia Highway 72 when he said a man in a white Ford F-250 began following him, then brake checking and making on obscene hand gesture.

To avoid the motorist, the man reported to the officer that he turned onto Fourth Street which passes Colbert City Hall and stopped. However, the other motorist also pulled in and stopped. The suspect exited his pickup and without a word attacked the Comer man, according to the report.

The Comer man said he began punching the man in the face, busting his eye, lip and nose, which splattered the man’s blood on him, according to the report. The victim said he was unhurt in the fight.

A woman also reported to the deputy that she saw the road rage, stopped and shouted that she was calling 911 as the men fought.

The suspect ran back to his truck and fled at a high speed, sideswiping the Comer man’s truck and almost hitting the woman’s vehicle, the deputy reported.

Two other women also stopped, telling the deputy they observed the incident and that the attack on the Comer man appeared unprovoked, according to the report. The women described the suspect as “covered in his own blood” as he left the scene, while the responding deputy said when he arrived he saw the Comer man “covered in blood.”

The Comer man said he didn’t want to prosecute, but he did want the man to pay for damages to his truck. However, the woman who called 911 told the deputy that she wanted to prosecute as she feared for her own safety and that of her children who were in her car as the suspect recklessly drove away.

The suspect was described as a heavy-set white male wearing a University of Georgia football jersey. He wore glasses and appeared to be in his 30s. An older white male passenger was also in the truck, which was last seen leaving on Colbert Danielsville Road.
