Rochester man kidnaps child at gunpoint, shoots into home

A Rochester man accused of abducting his own child at gunpoint early Monday morning is facing numerous felony charges, according to police.

Malik Breedlove, 25, was charged with second-degree kidnapping, first-degree burglary, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and first-degree reckless endangerment, all felonies, in connection with the encounter that started around 1:30 a.m. at a Fifth Street residence, said Capt. Greg Bello of the Rochester Police Department. Breedlove was also charged with endangering the welfare of a child and fourth-degree criminal mischief, both misdemeanors.

Breedlove is accused of throwing rocks at the windows of the Fifth Street home when a resident – a woman with whom Breedlove shares a child – opened the front door to tell him to leave. Breedlove allegedly displayed a handgun and forced his way inside, Bello said.

Breedlove is accused of forcing the duo’s 5-year-old child from the home, Bello said. He is also accused of firing at least one round through the front door when adults in the home attempted to stop him, according to police.

Within minutes of the report, officers located Breedlove and the child – who was not injured – near Central Park and Niagara Street, Bello said. The child was safety reunited with the child’s mother, Bello said.

Breedlove – who allegedly had a handgun loaded with nine rounds when he was apprehended – is being held in the Monroe County Jail and is scheduled to be arraigned in City Court on Tuesday morning, Bello said. Breedlove is also facing two outstanding warrants in City Court, according to police.
