WEST PORTSMOUTH — Local student Jack Bell is a jack of trades. He is a community volunteer, a theatre kid, a member of the Portsmouth West Senator Marching Band, and dedicated Boy Scout in Troop 43 out of Friendship, Ohio. He is a 17-year-old Life Scout working to gain status of Eagle Scout, setting out on a mission to build a fire circle dedicated to the late Orville Bud Reiser as his service project
“It consists of a half-circle of porch swings with a fire pit at the center,” Bell explained. “It’s going to be at Ohio River Campground. It’s something I thought of on my own. I wanted to dedicate something to Bud,” Bell explained. “He was important, not only to our troop, but our community. He helped so many people. So many boys achieved their Eagle rank through our troop thanks to his service for about 70 years.”
Bell said he was personally inspired by the late Scout Master.
“He really inspired me to want to be part of this community of Eagle Scouts because he had this work ethic like no other. He built three cabins on his hillside by himself,” Bell explained. “It really inspired me to be part of this program, because it showed how hard of a worker he is.”
According to Bell, much of the project has been accomplished, including the fire fit and swing framing.
“We need to put a roof over the swings, so people can sit in the daytime as well. We also need to assemble and hang the swings and spread gravel,” Bell explained.
The project is estimated to cost the Scout more than $3,000. He currently has $1,500 raised. He is seeking support to continue his work.
“I still have a way to go on the fundraising part,” Bell stated. “If people are interested in supporting the project, they may contact me to inquire about a donation. I’ll be grateful for a donation in any amount. We currently have four recognized levels of giving. Individual Level is $25, Bronze Level is $100, Silver Level is $250, and Gold Level is $500.”
People may seek Bell out on Facebook, by calling 740.464.9475, or through email at belljack2007@gmail.com
“I think this project not only commemorates the life of a great man we have lost, but it is a place to bring the community together,” Bell said.
