Search and recovery efforts underway after reports of a woman drowning at Big Island Pond

The New Hampshire State Police Marine Patrol is currently conducting a search and recovery effort after a woman drowned at the Big Island Pond.

Around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, first responders were dispatched to Chase Island Road to reports of someone yelling for help.

Marine Patrol officers, along with members of the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, Atkinson Police Department, Atkinson Fire Department, Hampstead Police Department, Hampstead Fire Department, Derry Police Department, Derry Fire Department, PrideStar EMS, Plaistow Fire/Rescue and EMS, and Salem Fire Department responded.

Initial investigations believe that the person had fallen through the icy water and drowned.

Recovery efforts remain ongoing, while the search has been suspended until daylight hours.

New Hampshire State Police and Marine Patrol remind people to be cautious before going onto open ice.
