‘Severance’ Season 2 review: Apple TV+ hit returns darker and more twisted than ever

The Apple TV+ show Severance became a streaming sensation when it premiered in 2022 and Season 2 arriving on Jan. 17 is one of the most highly anticipated TV releases of the year. The series had big expectations to meet with its first season being so beloved, but luckily the show starring Adam Scott, Britt Lower, Zach Cherry, Tramell Tillman, John Turturro and Patricia Arquette, with director and executive producer Ben Stiller, completely delivers.

Severance Season 2 is unique, imaginative, gripping and sharp. The storytelling has gotten more complex, and bizarre, in the most satisfying way.

Adam Scott in “Severance” Season 2, premiering January 17, 2025 on Apple TV+.

The new season of Severance begins five months after the Season 1 finale, when Mark (Scott) finds out Lumon Industries’ “wellness counsellor” Miss Casey (Dichen Lachman) is his dead wife Gemma. Additionally, we found out that Helly (Lower) is the Innie version of the heir to the Lumon dynasty, Helena Eagan.

We jump right back into the bright white Lumon hallways, as Mark continues to look for answers about his wife. But he’s met by a new team and worried about what happened to Helly, Dylan (Cherry) and Irving (Turturro).

While we can’t say much about the specifics of the season, even the first episode, we’ll tease that when Mark is greeted by Milchick (Tramell Tillman), balloons in hand, it’s a fascinating setup for this quest for truth, and the lines between the Innies and the Outies are more blurred than ever.

What was most impressive about the first season of Severance is how a show filled with several sci-fi elements and abstract plot points was able maintain focus on the humanity of the story and its characters. That’s something that’s amplified in Season 2, the show continuing to do this very well.

We feel even more invested in the characters than we did before, with many of them even more fleshed out. Dylan and Irving, in particular, are highlights in Season 2. Again, we can’t say why, but there are even more layers of complexity revealed.

With the new characters we see in Severance Season 2, they range from the odd and curious, like Sarah Bock’s character, to the bizarre, but appealing, like Gwendoline Christie’s particularly memorable role.

Severance Season 2 is still intriguing, and presented in a way that’s very ready for fans to continue to come up with different theories. But the season did lose some momentum, with the pace lagging slightly in some episodes.

But something that’s never compromised is the visual appeal of every single scene, including the contrast between the world inside and outside the Lumon building. It’s just impeccable cinematography.

The real thread of Season 2 is that we’re going deeper into the characters and Lumon operations, and while many moments are darker and more emotional in the new season, the show never wavers in its ability to ingest fun and sarcasm at the perfect moments.

It’s mysterious, alluring, unsettling in several moments, and every actor doesn’t miss a beat in articulating each character’s particular arc.

Get ready Severance fans, because Season 2 will have you dissecting every moment in the continuation of this triumphant show.
