SHELBY – A suspect is dead after Shelby police attempted to serve a warrant at 11:19 p.m. Saturday on a suspect at Arby’s on 234 Mansfield Ave.
Shelby police Sgt. Noah Kocher and Officer Dominic Ewing attempted to serve a warrant out of Shelby Municipal Court on Tyler Jacobs at Arby’s, when Jacobs stabbed Kocher in the neck with a knife, according to a press release from Shelby police Chief M. Lance Combs Sunday.
“While making initial contact with Jacobs and advising him of the warrant, Jacobs stabbed Kocher in the neck with a knife. Kocher was able to create physical distance from Jacobs, who then ran toward Kocher with knife still in hand.Kocher was able to draw his duty weapon and fire at and strike Jacobs,” Combs said in the release.
Ewing, who had been covering the back door of the restaurant, made immediate entry and provided aid to Kocher and provided critical aid to Jacobs.
Kocher and Jacobs were both transported to the hospital by Shelby Fire Department. Kocher is in stable condition; Jacobs succumbed to his wounds, Combs said.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation CI is investigating the shooting, Steve Irwin, spokesman for BCI said Sunday.
The Shelby Police Department thanked the Shelby Fire Department, Richland County Sheriff’s Office, Ohio State Highway Patrol, Lexington Police Department, Mansfield Police Department, Ontario Police Department and thePlymouth Police Department for their immediate response and assistance at the scene in multiple capacities, Combs said.
“We would also like to thank the staff of the Emergency Department and Ohio Health Mansfield Hospital for their attentive and professional care and support,” he said.
