Two people were shot and one man died early Monday morning in the new year’s first shooting after an argument turned deadly, according to Shelby Police.
Chief Brad Fraser said the incident happened around midnight near the Bojangles on East Dixon Boulevard and South Post Road.
“All three people knew each other,” he said. “Two of them were shot. They got into a car and drove down to Patterson Springs, Earl area, and they had a traffic accident.”
Fraser said the passenger was fatally wounded from the gunshot and was believed to already be dead when the car wreck occurred. Police will release the name of the deceased once family has been notified.
The driver had serious injuries but is expected to recover, Fraser said.
He said the men were all Cleveland County residents.
He said the suspected shooter, Jemarqus R. Archie, 41, was either still at the scene or had returned when officers arrived. Police believe all three men had arrived at the convenience store near Bojangles in the same car.
Archie has been charged with murder, attempted first-degree murder, discharging a weapon into occupied property and possession of a firearm by a felon. He is being held at the Cleveland County Detention Center. He had no bond set as of Monday at noon.
“They all three knew each other, so not sure what the fight was over,” Fraser said. “Looks like they just stopped at the convenience store and had an argument in the parking lot, and it turned to firearms and ended up with two of them being shot.”
