Shooting in downtown Puyallup — two suspects sought after firing at bus passenger

A shooting in downtown Puyallup prompted a multi-agency response Sunday, and an ongoing investigation, police said.

The initial report came at 4:42 p.m., citing multiple shots fired at a Pierce Transit bus headed southbound. Puyallup officers responded to 300 block of South Meridian, just past the intersection of Meridian and Pioneer Way.

“Two subjects exited the bus,” said Police Chief Scott Engle, who spoke to reporters at the scene. “Immediately upon exiting the bus, they started firing multiple rounds at a subject who was seated in the rear of the bus. Those subjects ended up fleeing on foot.”

The passenger was not hurt, Engle said — nor were the four other passengers or the driver. Initial reports gave partial descriptions of the suspects, suggesting both were adult males in their 20s. A subsequent statement on social media revised the description.

“Now believed to be younger- likely under 18 years of age for both suspects,” the statement said.

Police had not found the suspects as of 7:20, but the search was continuing, aided by multiple agencies and a K-9 unit, police said, asking anyone with information to call 911.

Officers found multiple shell casings at the scene, and the bus was damaged by multiple rounds, police said. After the shooting, the driver took the bus away from the scene to a transit center on South Hill.

“Followed protocol, drove the bus to a safe location,” Engle said.

Asked whether police would be able access camera footage, Engle said yes.

“The bus is equipped with cameras,” he said. “There are also cameras in this area of the shooting, so we will likely have very good video footage to work with. I feel very confident that our detectives will be able to work this case and find who’s responsible for what happened.”

The investigation is ongoing.
