Snow day called: Rutherford County Schools will be closed on Friday

Rutherford County Schools will be closed Friday for a snow day, spokesman James Evans announced.

“As you know, all the forecasts are calling for significant snow to affect our county Friday and travel is not recommended,” Evans said in the press release.

“As such, Director of Schools Dr. Jimmy Sullivan is closing all Rutherford County schools on Friday, Jan. 10.”

In addition, the central office will be closed and all extracurricular activities are canceled for Friday, Evans said.

“We will keep you updated about events for the weekend, and we will send an update on Sunday about school on Monday,” Evans said. “Please be safe, and we hope you enjoy the snow.”

Smyrna government offices, Town Court, Golf Course, Event Center and Outdoor Adventure Center also will be closed Friday, spokeswoman Heather Kent said.

“The safety and well-being of our residents and employees are of utmost importance, and we encourage everyone to take the necessary precautions to stay safe,” Kent said in her press release.

“All essential personnel, including Police, Fire, Water Plant and Waste Water Plant departments, will continue to provide services.”

The expected snow will fall throughout Tennessee, starting in Memphis early Friday morning before the storm reaches the Nashville and Murfreesboro areas by late Friday morning and then reach East Tennessee by later afternoon and evening, said James LaRosa, a 25-year meteorologist with the National Weather Service Office in the Nashville area.

“It does look like a pretty good snow event shaping up for all of Middle Tennessee and across the whole state,” said LaRosa, noting that the storm will make travel hazardous.

The snow fall arriving late Friday morning in Rutherford County should continue in the afternoon and early evening. About 4 to 6 inches of snow is expected “with the possibility of higher amounts,” LaRosa said.

“Roads are going to be pretty messy,” LaRosa said.
