A man who brought his father’s body to Livingston County sheriff’s deputies earlier this week has been charged with murder.
The incident spanned three days and two counties. Here’s more on what we know:
Who was Richard Fluegel Sr.?
Livingston County Sheriff Thomas Dougherty on Tuesday said that Richard Fluegel Sr., 60, left Irondequoit around 2 p.m. Sunday and did not return.
His family later reported him missing. His vehicle the next morning was found within the Village of Dansville, in southern Livingston County. Dougherty said that authorities attempted to locate Fluegel all day on Monday without success.
What happened to alert police?
Fluegel’s 30-year-old son – Richard Fluegel Jr. of Rochester – called the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office late Monday night to report that he was in the parking lot of the sheriff’s office and that he wanted to turn in a body.
Dougherty said deputies quickly located the younger Fluegel and the body of who Dougherty said authorities believed to be his father.
“Livingston County is a safe place,” Dougherty said at a Tuesday afternoon news conference. “This kind of stuff doesn’t happen. We don’t have people just show up and say they have a dead body with them and they’d like to turn in. It’s not common.”
How did Richard Fluegel Sr. die?
The elder Fluegel was believed to have been fatally shot, Dougherty said. He suffered multiple gun shot wounds and was pronounced dead.
What charges were filed?
Richard Fluegel Jr., a Monroe County resident, was charged with second-degree murder, first-degree criminal use of a firearm and second-degree tampering with physical evidence, all felonies. Dougherty confirmed Wednesday morning. He was arraigned Tuesday night and is being held in the Livingston County Jail without bail. He will later answer those charges in Livingston County Court.
