SOUTH BEND — A South Bend man faces felony charges after being suspected of shooting into two homes on Christmas Day.
The South Bend Police Department responded to the 1800 block of Kemble Avenue following a report of shots fired on Dec. 25 around 6:50 p.m., police said in a press release.
Two occupied homes were damaged from gun fire, police said. Through an investigation, the department’s Violent Crimes Unit identified 28-year-old Franklin Soto-Meza as a suspect.
Spent casings were found in the driveway of a home belonging to Soto-Meza’s child’s grandparents and a projectile was found inside that residence, a South Bend Police detective said in a probable cause affidavit. According to the probable cause affidavit, six people were in that home, including Soto-Meza’s daughter. ShotSpotter sensors in the area also recorded three sounds resembling gunfire, the probable cause affidavit said.
No one was injured in this incident, the press release said.
Soto-Meza told the detective he fired three times into the grass while standing next to the porch, the probable cause affidavit said. Spent casings were found 30 feet from the front porch and the front yard did not have any defects or concrete resembling projectile impacts, the detective said in the affidavit.
According to a press release, Soto-Meza told detectives he fired shots outside after getting into a domestic argument.
The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s office charged Soto-Meza on Dec. 27 with two felony counts of criminal recklessness for shooting a firearm into a building. He’s currently being held at the St. Joseph County Jail.
This is the second shooting in South Bend that took place on Christmas Day. A teen girl was injured after a shooting occurred before midnight on the 300 block of East Donald Street. Police have not provided an update on her condition nor the investigation.
