A special election will be held in February to fill the House District 24 seat in the Maine House of Representatives vacated by Democrat Joseph Perry.

Perry was re-elected to fill that seat in November, but had to resign after being chosen by his peers to serve as state treasurer. House District 24 covers parts of Bangor, Brewer, Orono and all of Veazie.

The special election will be held Tuesday, Feb. 25, according to a news release from the Maine Department of the Secretary of State. The state’s political parties will choose candidates for the seat. Those nominations are due to the Secretary of State by 5 p.m. on Jan. 10.

Non-party candidates need to obtain 50-80 signatures from registered voters in the district, which must be certified by the municipal clerks before submitting. Those petitions also must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Jan. 10.

Write-in candidates have until 5 p.m. on Jan. 14 to declare candidacy. Forms for write-ins and non-party candidates can be obtained by contacting the elections division of the Secretary of State at 207-624-7650.

Former Maine House Majority Leader Mo Terry of Gorham was expected to take on the position of treasurer in an uncontested race, but Perry made a last minute decision to vie for the position after his colleagues indicated that Republicans would support him.

The candidate chosen to fill Perry’s spot will serve out the remainder of the two-year term.
