CAPE CARTERET, N.C. (WNCT) — A small stretch of N.C. Highway 24 in Cape Carteret will have its speed limit reduced soon.
The 6/10th of a mile stretch toward the East side of Cape Carteret town limits and the entire stretch of Taylor Notion Road could soon have its speed limits reduced from 45 miles per hour to 35.
Town officials said safety is the number one concern and reason for the proposal. The changes are being proposed by town leaders to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
“With all the additional traffic, the police department believes it would create safer driving conditions in Cape Carteret,” Cape Carteret Town Manager Frank Rush said. “The transition occurs right near White Oak Elementary, so, by pushing that just a little further East, we think it’ll create safer traffic conditions in that area.”
Rush said the town is seeing extra traffic due to population growth. He said tourist season brings a lot of traffic to both N.C. 24 and Taylor Notion Road.
“Particularly on Taylor Notion Road, that was some of the concerns of people speeding in that area. By reducing that to 35 mph, we hope that will promote and encourage some safer speeds out on that road,” Rush said. “Same thing on Highway 24, that was more driven by police departments’ concerns as you approach White Oak Elementary School.”
Rush said people could see the changes soon.
“NCDOT has indicated that they will honor that request so I expect that will probably happen in the next month or two,” Rush said.
