Speed limit in Twelve Mile set to change

Motorists will soon have to slow down while driving through the Town of Twelve Mile.

During a County Commissioners meeting on Monday, Highway Superintendent Jeff Smith explained County Road 800 East, which runs north to south and is also known as Jefferson Street, has an established speed limit of 35 mph.

Cutting across the town east to west, State Road 16 has an established speed limit of 25 mph.

“We feel that it would be appropriate to have a matching speed limit on our street going through town as the state highway does,” Smith told the commissioners.

They agreed.

The reduced speed limit will affect County Road 800 from 700 feet south of Washington Street to 970 feet north of Pickle Street. Smith explained those boundaries cover the approximate boundaries of Twelve Mile’s most densely populated areas.

The highway superintendent noted his department planned to check out additional unincorporated communities across the county to make sure their speed limits are consistent with the Indiana Department of Transportation’s speed limits.

Signs for the new speed limit are being made now. Depending on how much snow Cass County gets in the following days, Smith explained, the new speed limit should be posted in Twelve Mile by next week.
