Starbucks baristas at Anderson Township location join nationwide ‘Strike Before Christmas’

The unionized baristas of an Anderson Township Starbucks store joined a nationwide strike Tuesday.

Unionized workers at the standalone Starbucks location at 7412 Beechmont Ave. joined more than 300 stores across the U.S. in a planned walkout. The Anderson shop organized under Starbucks Workers United last summer.

Anderson baristas picketed Tuesday – Christmas Eve – on the fifth and final day of the nationwide Strike Before Christmas, a spokesperson with Workers United confirmed.

The walkouts aim to raise awareness of what union officials call unfair labor practices. They say Starbucks backtracked on a path forward with the union over contract negotiations and the broader issue of organizing and collective bargaining going forward.

The strike this week is anticipated to be the largest-ever unfair labor practice strike aimed at the coffee giant, with more than 5,000 workers across 300-plus stores participating. It is expected to surpass the 2023 Red Cup Day strike, when workers protested one of the busiest days of the year in which customers can get free reusable cups.
