State investigating ‘officer-involved death’ of female Sunday in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS − The Wisconsin Department of Justice is investigating “an officer-involved death” that took place Sunday evening.

At about 11:40 p.m. Sunday, a Grand Rapids police officer responded to a welfare check requested at a home in the 7500 block of Kellner Road in Grand Rapids. When the officer found an uncooperative female, officers from the Wisconsin Rapids Police Department and Wood County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene to help, according to a news release from the Department of Justice.

The officers took the female into custody, but she became unresponsive a short time later while they were still at the house, according to the news release. An ambulance took the female to a local hospital where a doctor pronounced her dead.

No guns were fired during the incident, according to the news release.

The Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation is handling the case. The involved officers, who were wearing body cameras during the incident, are on administrative duty during the investigation.

When the investigation is complete, the reports will be turned over to the Wood County District Attorney’s Office.
