Mail shipped and delivered by the U.S. Postal Service is facing backlogs in Louisville due to staffing shortages and the ongoing recovery from January’s winter storms, a spokesperson said Thursday.
The Postal Service’s operations have been “significantly impacted” by the snow and ice that arrived in Louisville earlier this month, with the agency seeing “an increase in employee availability issues following the storms,” communications specialist Susan Wright said in a statement.
Delays in mail and package delivery in the Louisville area are temporary, Wright said.
“Senior leaders are actively working with local teams to address the situation and restore the level of service our customers are accustomed to,” the statement read. “We are committed to resuming normal operations as quickly and safely as possible.”
In a statement on social media, U.S. Rep. Morgan McGarvey, whose district covers much of Louisville, said his office had contacted the Postal Service regarding the mail delays. McGarvey said he wants to help USPS resolve the backlog “ASAP.”
McGarvey’s office has heard from multiple constituents about issues with Postal Service mail, communications director Albert Fujii told The Courier Journal on Thursday.
“I know we’re all waiting on mail in Louisville right now,” McGarvey stated. “This needs to get fixed.”
The Postal Service did not say how many pieces of mail were impacted by the delays in Louisville. Customers can track their individual orders on the USPS website. If a customer suspects their mail is missing, they can complete a help request form. If an order still has not arrived after seven business days, customers can file a missing mail search request with the Postal Service. The following information will be needed:
-
Recipient mailing address
-
Size and type of container or envelope you used
