Suspects face additional charges over alleged armed robbery of Englewood diners in August

Additional charges have been filed in an alleged armed robbery by masked gunmen of diners outside a restaurant in Englewood over the summer, said the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.

On Aug. 3, the Englewood Police Department responded to a report of a robbery of patrons dining outdoors on Engle Street at about 12:11 a.m., officials said.

Multiple victims were reportedly assaulted and robbed of their jewelry and other personal items, the prosecutor’s office said. The five alleged perpetrators, who were said to be wearing ski masks and armed with handguns, are also accused of trying to steal car keys from the valet area of the restaurant.

In mid-December, the prosecutor’s office announced that Altamir L. Thornton, 22, Yashir T. Phillips, 20, Rahiem A. Maldonado, 22, and a 17-year-old male had been arrested on Nov. 26.

Maldonado was hit with new charges on Jan. 10, the BCPO said on Tuesday.

Authorities accuse Maldonado of fleeing from police prior to his arrest on Nov. 26. Officials said Maldonado was spotted in a car in November with a female driver before he fled from the police on foot.

A handgun containing a large capacity magazine and hollow point ammunition was found in the car after it was impounded and searched, officials said.

Farha F. Sharif was the driver of the car with the robbery suspect. She was initially released, officials said, but when “officials tried to make contact at her residence, Sharif also fled, attempting to evade law enforcement by jumping over a fence in the backyard.”

Sharif was taken into custody without further incident, said the BCPO. She is being charged with possession of a handgun, resisting arrest, possession of a large capacity magazine and possession of hollow nose bullet. She is in Bergen County Jail pending further court appearance.

Maldonado is also being charged with possession of a gun and fleeing from an arrest. Specifically, his updated charges are possession of a handgun, certain persons not to have weapons, resisting arrest, hindering, possession of a large capacity magazine and possession of hollow nose bullets. He remains detained at Bergen County Jail, pending trial.

He was originally charged with three counts of armed robbery, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, aggravated assault and two counts of aggravated assault and conspiracy to commit theft. The other adult defendants, Thornton and Philips, were charged with the same crimes.

Philips was additionally charged with use of a 17-year-old to commit a criminal offense. Thornton has updated charges of two counts of use of a 17-year-old to commit a criminal offense, receiving stolen property, possession of a large capacity magazine. He is also in Bergen County Jail, pending trial.

The 17-year-old juvenile, who had been arrested in the alleged armed robbery, has been charged with three counts of armed robbery, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, aggravated assault, attempted theft and receiving stolen property.

The original press release from the BCPO said a second juvenile was involved in the robbery and was charged on Dec. 3 but has not been located and remains wanted by authorities.
