TARC to reduce service levels through Sunday as snow, ice linger in Louisville

Buses for the Transit Authority of River City will run at reduced capacity through Sunday, TARC officials said in a news release Wednesday.

TARC will focus on providing service to core routes and gradually restore service to other routes as it becomes feasible, officials said. Several routes served from Thursday to Sunday.

TARC will prioritize service for six major routes, which see high levels of ridership, serve major employers in the area and run on streets expected to be in good shape, officials said. Those routes are:

Routes that are cancelled for Thursday through Sunday include:

  • #43 Portland-Poplar Level Road

  • #52 Medical Center Circulator

  • Scheduled shopper service

TARC will service all other routes at reduced levels, including those in southern Indiana, where service was suspended Sunday amid the winter storm’s height.

After a weather-related delay in services, a TARC bus carried passengers west on Broadway Monday morning after winter storm Blair moved through the metro Louisville area. Jan. 6, 2025.

Adjusted schedules for routes getting reduced service across the network are not clear, but riders can get updates on TARC services by by calling the Customer Care Line Monday through Saturday at (502) 585-1234.

“Riders should continue to expect delays and plan accordingly,” officials said.

TARC3, the transit agency’s paratransit service, will continue serving customers, though officials are urging customers to delay traveling if possible, as access to many side streets is still a challenge. TARC3 customers can call at (502) 560-0333 to schedule their trips.

The agency is factoring ongoing road hazards, reduced ridership and the possibility of more snow hitting the area Friday into its decisions for how much service to provide. Officials said they will announce plans for service next week on Sunday.

TARC’s services have been curtailed since Sunday, when Winter Storm Blair slammed the region with more than 10 inches of snow in some places.

On Tuesday, Mayor Craig Greenberg said road crews will begin focusing efforts on roads outside of Louisville’s 110 designated snow routes in an effort to help key public agencies, including Jefferson County Public Schools, the Louisville Free Public Library and TARC, return to normal operations.
