Texas lawmaker Venton Jones proposes to partner on first day of 89th legislative session

Today was a special day for Texas state Rep. Venton Jones, D-Dallas. During the 89th legislative session, Jones was sworn in for his second term as House District 100.

Jones said he is eager to get back to work for Texans on issues such as housing, property taxes and other pressing affairs, according to a post on X.

After getting sworn in, Jones immediately had something else to address.

The state Capitol hosts the Texas Legislature every two years, and the 89th legislative session started Tuesday. During a recess, in the presence of family, friends, colleagues, and supporters, Jones knelt and proposed to his longtime partner, Gregory Scott Jr.

Scott said yes, Jones later confirmed.

Who is Venton Jones?

Jones represents Texas House District 100, encompassing central Dallas and parts of downtown. Recently, he was elected as the Texas House Democratic Caucus Whip and Vice-Chair of the Texas LGBTQ Caucus. According to a press release from his office, Jones is also one of the first Black gay men to serve in the Texas Legislature.
