Thursday’s funeral schedule for former President Jimmy Carter. National funeral to interment

Since last week, the nation has mourned the death of its longest-living president, Jimmy Carter. Funeral services started Saturday and will conclude Thursday with a day of celebration.

Carter will stop lying in state at the U.S. Capitol and his remains will be removed with a ceremony at 9 a.m. The remains will be transported to the Washington National Cathedral, arriving at 9:30 a.m. with another brief ceremony.

The National Funeral Service will start at 10 a.m. and is expected to last about an hour when the remains and the Carter family travel to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland to board Special Air Mission 39 at 11:45 a.m.

They will fly back to Georgia, landing at 2 p.m. at Lawson Army Airfield on Fort Moore near Columbus. The remains will be transferred to a hearse which will travel back to the Carters’ home town of Plains. The motorcade will arrive at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains for a private service at 3:45 p.m. which will last about an hour.

The family and Carter’s remains will finally travel to the Carters’ residence for a private internment ceremony at 5:20 p.m. The U.S. Navy will conduct a “Missing Man” formation flyover in honor of the former president’s naval service and time as commander in chief shortly after the motorcade’s arrival to the house.

Thursday schedule for Jimmy Carter funeral

  • A 9 a.m. ceremony at the U.S. Capitol as the motorcade departs for the Washington National Cathedral and a 9:30 a.m. arrival ceremony.

  • The National Funeral Service will take place at 10 a.m.

  • Following the ceremony, at 11:15 a.m., Carter’s family will travel by motorcade to Joint Base Andrews for departure back to Georgia.

  • Special Air Mission 39 arrives at Lawson Army Airfield at Fort Moore, Georgia, at 2 p.m.

  • Carter and his family then travel by motorcade to Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains for a private funeral service at 3:45 p.m.

  • The family will travel by motorcade at 4:45 to the Carter’s private residence for a private interment at 5:20 p.m.
