Trump inauguration 2025: Schedule of events, how to watch

President-elect Donald Trump will soon become President Trump, the 47th president of the United States.

On Jan. 20, Trump will be sworn in as president during inauguration ceremonies will in Washington, D.C. Before he is sworn in, JD Vance will be sworn in as vice president.

Tickets for the inauguration were made available, at no cost, through members of Congress. For those unable to watch in person, the events will be broadcast on TV and live streamed.

When is Trump’s inauguration?

The inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump will take place on Monday, Jan. 20.

This coincides with Martin Luther King Jr. Day, making it a national holiday.

The same thing happened for Trump’s first inauguration in 2017.

Inauguration Day is the day when the president-elect and vice-president-elect are sworn in and take office, according to USA.gov.

Flags will be at half-staff on Inauguration Day. Trump not happy about it

President-elect Donald Trump is not happy American flags on federal buildings will be at half-staff during his inauguration ceremony on Jan. 20. The flags were ordered lowered, as is customary, to honor the memory of President Jimmy Carter, who died Dec. 29.

Inauguration Day 2025 schedule

An exact schedule hasn’t yet been posted but here’s a general idea of events associated with the inauguration compiled from the Trump Vance Inaugural Committee,  National Park Service and the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies.

The day usually begins with a procession to the capitol. The outgoing president usually accompanies the president-elect in the procession, according to JCCIC.

Theme for 2025 presidential inauguration

The theme of the 60th Inaugural Ceremonies is “Our Enduring Democracy: A Constitutional Promise,” according to the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies.

The theme “recognizes the Founders’ commitment to future generations of Americans to preserve the continuity and stability of our democratic system of government.”

What is the oath of office for president and vice president?

According to USA.gov, the vice-president-elect is sworn in first and repeats the same oath of office as senators, representatives, and other federal employees:

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.”

Around noon, the president-elect recites this oath:

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

How many inaugural guests will be present on the platform when Trump is sworn in?

The Presidential Inaugural Platform will hold nearly 1,400 inaugural guests, according to the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies.

Among those on the platform will be:

  • members of the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives

  • the President and vice president and their families

How do you get tickets to attend the inauguration?

More than 220,000 tickets to the 60th Inaugural Ceremonies were to be distributed.

“Tickets are free and allow you to watch in person on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol as the president and vice president are sworn in on Jan. 20, 2025,” according to USA.gov.

Tickets for the Inaugural Ceremonies have to be requested through members of the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives for the 119th Congress.

The JCCIC released tickets to members of Congress in early January 2025 for distribution to constituents.

What is the JCCIC, Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies?

The JCCIC is responsible for the planning and execution of the Inaugural Ceremonies of the president-elect and vice president-elect of the United States at the Capitol.

The first inauguration planned by the JCCIC was in 1901 for President William McKinley.
