Two inmates at the South Dakota State Penitentiary were sentenced to additional time in prison after assaulting two correctional officers in 2023, according to a press release from the South Dakota Office of the Attorney General.
The incident occurred on Aug. 24, 2023, in Unit D of the Jameson Annex in Sioux Falls, according to the press release. The men were found guilty of their crimes in Nov. 2024.
Lester Monroe, 49, was initially serving a sentence at the penitentiary for charges relating to a simple assault on a law enforcement officer, according to the press release.

He will now serve an additional 35 years in prison, after his previous sentence is served, on one count of attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer and one count of aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer, according to the press release.
Kyle Jones, 31, was initially serving a sentence at the penitentiary for first-degree manslaughter charges, according to the press release.
The man will serve an additional 50 years, after his previous sentence is served, on one count of attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer and one count of aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer and one count of simple assault of a Department of Corrections employee, according to the press release.
