Two JPS high schools shift to virtual learning due to heating system failure amid cold snap

Jackson Public Schools officials announced two high schools will temporarily shift to virtual learning on Thursday due to the failure of heating systems.

Those two schools are Forest Hill High School and Jim Hill High School.

Official also said JPS students from Wilkins Elementary and Shirley Elementary Schools will return to in-person learning at alternate locations while the district continues to restore heat at the impacted schools.

  • Wilkins Elementary students and staff will report to New Horizon Church, located at 1750 Bobby Rush Boulevard (formerly Ellis Avenue).

  • Shirley Elementary students and staff will report to the College of Science, Engineering, and Technology at Jackson State University.

JPS officials said buses will resume their regular schedules — transporting students between home, school, and each alternate location. Breakfast and lunch will be served at Jackson State and New Horizon by JPS Child Nutrition’s team.

“We are deeply grateful to our partners at New Horizon Church and Jackson State University for accommodating our scholars and staff as we work to resolve our heating challenges. JPS maintenance teams and contractors will continue to work on restoring heat at the impacted schools,” said Sherwin Johnson, spokesperson for Jackson Public Schools.
