Two local Frisch’s Big Boys close, drop from ‘Here to stay’ list

Less than a week after proclaiming dozens of Frisch’s restaurants were “here to stay,” at least two of its Big Boys closed this weekend: in Green Township and Harrison.

Both properties were the subject of an eviction ruling on Nov. 6 in Hamilton County where a magistrate gave Frisch’s seven days to leave. Workers at both stores said they both closed Sunday.

The stores were located at:

  • 5351 North Bend Road, Green Township.

  • 1181 Stone Drive, Harrison.

Frisch’s Big Boy in Green Township closed Dec. 8.

Frisch’s removed the two Cincinnati area stores, as well as one Dayton location on Benchwood Road, from a list touted by the restaurant chain in a Dec. 3 social media post aimed at reassuring patrons that “No need to worry-Frisch’s is here to stay!”

How many Frisch’s are left?

The updated list indicates that Frisch’s has 57 remaining restaurants in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana – down from nearly 79 earlier this year after a previous wave of closures trimmed five locatons. In the past nine years, the store count of Frisch’s Big Boy has been cut in half from the the 121 locations, since it was acquired by the Atlanta-based investment firm in 2015 for $175 million.

The list also includes three other Cincinnati area locations that last month became targets for eviction by Frisch’s landlord:

  • 5760 Wooster Pike in Fairfax, the company’s historic Mainliner location

  • 1001 Gest St. in Queensgate

  • 2439 E Sharon Rd in Sharonville

All the properties are the subject of a court hearing scheduled for Friday, according to court records.

Also last week, seven other Frisch’s in Northern Kentucky are locations were reportedly told by their landlord to vacate.

Who is NNN Reit?

The closures come amid Frisch’s Restaurants’ disclosure on Oct. 23 that it faces an unspecified number of evictions from several locations due to “unforeseen circumstances.” Court records revealed “more than 20” properties face eviction in Southwest Ohio. Records also show the landlord, Orlando-based NNN Reit Inc., claims Frisch’s owes more than $4.5 million in rent.

Frisch’s and NNN Reit officials did not respond to messages seeking comment.

NNN owns 66 Frisch’s properties, according to its portfolio on its website, nnnreit.com. The Florida company acquired dozens of locations in 2015 when the chain sold the properties and leased them back.
