Two people arrested in armed carjacking of Uber driver in Peoria

The Peoria Police Department arrested two people Tuesday night after they allegedly stole a vehicle from an Uber driver.

Jerome McShan, 19, and Mykayla D. Samuels, 18, both of Peoria, were arrested on charges of vehicular hijacking, aggravated robbery and unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle after they allegedly took a vehicle from an Uber driver at gunpoint.

Police said that at 7:58 p.m., they responded to the 2400 block of North Northcrest Drive after they received a report of a carjacking involving a female Uber driver.

When officers arrived, they spoke with the woman, who told them that she picked up a man and a woman in the 800 block of West Hurlburt Street. The pair asked her to take them to North Northcrest Drive before the man pulled out a handgun and told her to pull over. The woman complied, left the vehicle and the pair drove off.

The vehicle was found in a residence in East Peoria. A short while later, two men went into the vehicle and drove off toward a Dollar General store in the 1100 block of Spring Bay Road.

With help from the Greater Peoria Auto Crimes Task Force, the PPD Special Investigations Division and the Woodford County Sheriff’s Office, police took McShan and one other person into custody.

Later, a search warrant was obtained for a home on East Hoffman Road in East Peoria, where they found Samuels along with property belonging to the Uber driver, two BB guns and ammunition. Samuels was then taken into custody.

Both McShan and Samuels appeared in Peoria County Circuit Court on Wednesday after the Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office filed petitions to deny the pair pre-trial release. Both hearings were continued until Thursday at 3 p.m., with Circuit Judge Mark Gilles presiding over the proceedings.

Both are currently being held in the Peoria County Jail.
